About
Shaoyi’s practice centres on enabling deeper connections between objects and viewers. He identifies everyday ‘mundane’ objects & materials infusing them with a visual juxtaposition and formal playfulness.
By channelling people’s perceptions of what a material is supposed to do, he allows the viewer to initially recognize familiarity within the forms, only to then draw them upon closer observation to discover that an artifact is either made with unexpected materials and/or contains other visual surprises.
This interaction aims to create a deeper, more complex connection between the object and the viewer. The viewer is encouraged to share the experience with others, creating a vehicle for conversation and stronger social interactions.
As a result, the once ‘mundane’ objects take on a greater heritage value, leading to an extension of its physical lifespan and in turn offering more sustainability for the artifacts.
